You can also play them as drum grooves, not only as technical exercises.
After all, it comes down to how you play the rhythms.
To help you make the most out of your practice time, I’ve also included a free, printable sheet music PDF for you.
Here you go:

And now, let’s take a deeper look into each pattern.
1. Four On The Floor Foot Ostinato For Stamina And Precision
Table Of Contents

(First bar is your counting you in.)
As with each of today’s rock drum patterns, you’re going to play
- constant eighth notes on the hi-hat and
- the snare as the backbeat on 2 as well as 4.
The kick or bass drum, however, varies.
As you can see, our first pattern has the so-called four on the floor ostinato.
This means:
You’ll play the kick as the foundation, and on each 1, 2, 3, 4.
This will help build
- foot independence as well as
- stamina and
- control.
Also make sure to play the kick exactly with the snare.
Please avoid dragging or rushing.
This will make the groove sloppy.
2. Let’s Add Some More Kick To The Fun

The heavy four on the floor feeling is awesome.
But how about we add some more kick to the pattern?
As you can hear, it becomes even more heavy.
And also a greater challenge for your
- independence,
- coordination
- and control.
Again, make sure to play each note
- in-time and
- in the same volume.
3. Easy Rock Drum Patterns With Offbeat Kicks

The previous two drum patterns were great fun to play.
But what happens if we don’t play the kick on 1, 2, 3, 4?
And add the snare on 1?
Yet again, we get a fantastic pattern that will also challenge your concentration.
Remember:
The hands keep on playing what they played before.
The kick, however, is on the off beats now.
This changes the feeling and sound of the beats drastically.
Just like the level of difficulty for most drum beginners.
But don’t worry:
Start with a comfortable practice tempo and play each note intentionally.
This will help you learn each of our rock drum patterns fast.
Also, intentional drum practice will make you feel confident in your playing.
Soon, you’ll not only have mastered our rock drum patterns.
You also will feel the difference in terms of your kick independence.
All the best to you.
