Which song should I learn first on drums?
That’s a quite common and understandable question.
After all, there are many, many beginner-friendly songs out there.
You’re totally new to drums?
In this case, make sure to check out this song:
We Will Rock You By Queen
Surprise, surprise?
We Will Rock You in my opinion is the best first song to learn on drums.
Why?
There are several reasons to it:
- You very, very likely know the song. Maybe you even know the beat without practicing.
- It’s a catchy tune and really fun to drum to.
- The tempo is not too slow, but also not too fast. Perfect for beginners!
See why I recommend Queen‘s classic as the first song to learn on drums?
But wait:
What if you don’t like it?
Are there any alternatives to We Will Rock You?
Glad you ask. 🙂
This Is The Very First Song I Learned As A Drum Beginner
I’ve been playing the drums for over 15 years now.
When I started out, I already had a band and was taking lessons.
The first “real” song I ever played with a band was Where Did You Sleep Last Night? by Nirvana.
If you listen to the song, you’ll know why:
- Beginner-friendly tempo? Check.
- Nice tune? Definitely!
- Not too complex? Yes: Just one basic beat needed.
Funny enough, We Will Rock You and Where Did You Sleep Last Night? both share the same criterias for a beginner-friendly tune.
Still, I recommend Queen’s classic as the very first song to learn on drums.
Nirvana is a great second pick.
Alternatives To We Will Rock You As Your First Song To Learn On Drums
Need some more inspiration?
- Seven Nation Army by the White Stripes
- and Paranoid by Black Sabbath
are fun and quite easy to play on the drums as well.
I’m sure you’ll also enjoy Plays Pretty For Baby by Saosin.
I also played it back then in my band.
Absolutely great tune to jam to! 🙂
And sure:
The first song you’re going learn on drums can be totally different.
Take my ideas as a inspiration, but do your own thing.
That’s key to long-term drumming happiness. 🙂
And that’s what we’re all in for, right?
Cheers,
Manu
