How You Can Easily Decide On What To Practice Next

What to practice drums ideas

Ok, and now? What to practice next?

I bet you’ve asked yourself this question before.

As a drummer, you can learn a LOT.

That’s awesome, but the amount of potential exercises might give you a hard time setting your next goal.

To help you out, I’m sharing a bunch of simple ways to find out what you can practice next on the drums.

Think Of What You’d Actually Love To Practice Next

It might sound trivial, but it definitely isn’t:

To find out what to practice next, rely on your personal wishes and thoughts.

Think of what you actually want to learn next.

Are we talking

  • a new drum beat,
  • fill or
  • song?

By thinking about the next drumming goal, you find the path to your next exercise.

Now, you can decide how to master the first step of getting into your plan.

For example:

If you want to learn a new groove, listen to some music or browse the internet for inspiration.

Make It Helpful!

Another way of finding out what you should practice next looks like this:

Ask yourself which exercise would benefit you now the most.

This could be learning a certain fill for a song, or simply tackling your first steps with the click.

No matter what it is for you: Make your practice time helpful and worthwhile.

For example:

When playing to a song, and you’re permanently making mistakes while playing this certain beat, you know it will be helpful practicing it again.

Simply Have Somebody Telling You What To Practice Next

Is there really a way to find somebody who’s doing the work for you?

Yes, there actually is.

This someone is called a professional drum teacher.

He or she is an expert in drumming and can therefore provide you with the best advice on how to reach your personal next level.

That’s one great reason why it’s a good idea to get drum lessons.

Take A Look At Former Exercises

Another cool way of finding out what to practice next is this one here:

Get back to past drumming exercises and revise them.

You can play as they were nothing? Great, test accomplished!

You’re still struggling with a certain exercise? Now it’s time to practice this one again.

Buy Inspiration: A New Book Or Online Course For Drummers

Over the past years, I’ve built a substantial collection of drumming books.

Yes, I’m a drum teacher.

However, I also love the inspiration they give me.

So if you don’t have a clue on what to practice next, you might consider buying a new drum book, online course or simply search the web for free drumming exercices.

New input can unlock your motivation for practicing again.

What about you?

How do you find out on what to practice next?

Cheers,
