Start drumming?
These two words can change your life forever.
I remember my first day as a drummer like it was yesterday.
However, it actually has been more than 15 years since I first hit the kit!
But why am I telling this?
You see, as an drum instructor and female drummer I’ve been confronted a lot with inscecurities about playing the drums.
For example, there are people thinking they were to old to start.
On the other hand, some think that they lack a sense of timing.
Or worse: They believe in a thing called talent! 😉
So in this drumming guide, I want to show you how you can finally start drumming when you’re afraid of living this dream.
There are only three simple steps required to get you startet.
Step 1: Know why you want to start drumming
Table Of Contents
If you want to start drumming I highly recommend knowing your why first.
This will help keeping your level of motivation constantly high.
Let’s be honest: When you don’t know why you’re doing something, you probably lack the fire.
You simply won’t get things done – at least not properly or on a long term persepctive.
So what’s it for you? Why do you really want to start drumming?
Do you
- wish to play the drums in a band?
- simply like to have fun drumming? (And we sure know it is ;-))
- strive to do some drum covers on YouTube?
- enter some contests?
- search for a way to express your creativity?
- want to relax while enjoying a new hobby?
- be a musician after all and hang around with guys and girls who share your interests? (Ok, a little bit joking. ;-))
You see, I could write on this list for hours to come. However, I won’t because you can certainly see my point.
Step 2: Don’t overthink your decisions
What happens when you overthink of doing something for a long time? True, you might not be doing it.
This surely is great if you live a frugal lifestyle like me, for example. On the other hand, you might miss some really great opportunities. Like me sometimes, for example. 😉
So if you really want to start drumming, don’t overthink this decision.
Figure out what you neet to know, where to place your backside on a drumthrone and keep calm.
Step 3: Start drumming, right now!
Tomorrow is a new day, right? Exactly! But will we live long enough to enjoy it? Well, you never know …
See, my last thought on this topic is simple as that: If you were about to die tomorrow, what would you be thankful for?
As a drummer, I bet your favorite hobby will be part of your gratitude.
Try to keep in mind that each moment is an opportunity for change.
However, if you delay your decicion to start drumming day after day and year after year, you might actually never make it to a kit.
And to be honest, I’d be sorry for the great drumming time not spent. Now or never – what will it be for you?
Love,
